Bo-Kaap (meaning Above the Cape) is an area directly above Cape Town's City Centre. Originally, and still principally, a community for Muslims of Malay descent, this area of colourfully painted Edwardian homes is picture-postcard territory. Your biggest challenge in taking photos here is to avoid the DSLR-touting tourists. Some, like me, don't even live far away :)
Apart from dodging tourist cameras, the biggest challenge for this community is the growing popularity of the area, and the consequent impact on the value of the properties. One of the homes in this picture is listed for sale with a local agent at R2,9million. It has three bedrooms, one off-street garage and is on a stand on 114square metre. By Cape Town standards that's very expensive property.
I chose this picture because the cars in the street said it all - a Porsche, a clapped out Golf and a scooter. You live here because you have inherited property, or you buy in at a serious cost. But from the outside there's no saying which house goes with which car.

This is so reminiscent of the Carribbeean Islands...or even "Easter Egg Avenue" in Lunenburg! I love bright colours where they're appropriate, and they really work well here. I can see why the tourists...and even the locals...clamour! But $2.9 million is high rent by most anyone's standards! ...Thanks for your note & I hope you'll enjoy the scones.
