The village of Piketberg is about 90 minutes north of Cape Town. We drive through the town fairly regularly, because Michael's hall is in the Piket-Bo-Berg valley above the town. This picture is taken from the pass, looking down towards the town, and across the Swartland. At this time of the year the area is a mustard and brown patchwork because the wheat fields are already turning yellow. On the side of the mountain you can see the indigenous, uncultivated flora - imagine that the whole way across the valley, and now you know why the area is called the Swartland (Black Land).

Having done my share of traveling across the USA, via van (Ford Econoline), it never ceases to amaze me that I always do a double take at other's landscape pictures because of the similarity of the ecosystems. I guess there are only so many to go around. :-)
@byrdlip You are so right. I was in California a few years ago and was taken on the 17 mile drive near Monterey. My husband wanted to see the Lone Pine near Pebble Beach. We saw a busload of Japanese tourists at one point taking a million pictures - looking down towards the Big Sur. We couldn't make out what they were looking at - then we realised that it was the magnificent view ... but we had dismissed it because we have a very similar view around Cape Town!
