We had the pleasure of attending Starlight Classics at Lourensford Wine Estate this evening. It's an annual variety show that showcases a range of South African musicians.
I was thrilled when James Bhemgee stepped up to the stage. Last year when he was on SA's Got Talent, his performance prompted me to vote for him - the first and only time a live TV show has prompted me to 'vote'. And he won the title.
His is an interesting story. A Street sweeper who was 'discovered’ in the mid-90's, he was sponsored to be trained by the best in London. However, the sponsorship never got as far as marketing him, and by 2010 he was unemployed. His performance on SA's Got Talent got him back on the map, and now he's rehearsing with Andre Rieu to join his next tour.
It's a real lesson. When people are without the skills and background in an area, the training alone does not mean that they will be successful. They need the entire infrastructure that goes with the newly trained career.
As I listened the him singing Nessun Dorma this evening my heart was filled with happiness that he's found a successful place at last.

@cmt2812 Hmmm. Yes - I have seen clips of her. It's odd, but she does not appeal because I find the voice incongruous with the body, and keep getting distracted by the hair being flicked back. I need the whole package to work as one congruent package - fuddy duddy me :)
