Walking over the dead : a beautiful Irish place with a sinister story

This is the Clonakilty Bay. At high tide, it lies under 3 meters of water ; at low tide, it is a large area of treacherous soft sands. In 1642, a troup of 600 Irish rebels chased by the English army tried to walk through it, crossing from Clonakilty (on the far end) to the island of Inchydoney (from where the shot is made). They were already hurt and tired by the battle they had fought before, and were hoping to regroup on the island during the high waters. No one made it. They got stuck here in the soft sand and then caught and drowned by the rising of the tide. Their bodies got progressively swallowed by the sand, and their bones are still lying under here.

There is no information sign to mark the area, not even to warn people about the soft sands, but nobody dares to get there, even the foxes. So this area is a paradise for wintering sea birds, who find here plenty of cockles and worms, and no predators.

Interesting story, and how tragic. I can't imagine how they must have suffered.
Such a beautiful place, and photo.

What a dreadfully sad piece of history. It must be hard to view this area without thinking of those poor men.

What a tragic story. There should be at least some warning signs to keep people away.

That is a tragic story and especially to have their remains still there because of the treacherous conditions.

O no, what an emotional place! How strange that there are no signs indicating the history and β€˜bone warning β€˜...
