I have added some informations in blue in order to show the curious specificity of the place where we live for the moment. At the top of the picture, you can see the Clonakilty bay cutting into the land, and the Inchydoney Island in the middle of the bay. The bay gets completely empty and full again according to tides. At high tide, the island is surrounded by sea; at high tide, it is surrounded by muddy flats and soft sandbanks. The sea comes in and out of the bay through two narrow channels, one on each side of the island, in which the currents are incredibly strong in between tides.
@lmsa Hi Louise, thanks for your interest. There is a narrow causeway that you can notice as a short vertical line at the top of the map. It is located at the average high tide elevation, so right at this moment for example it is flooded. This is the only access, even at low tide you can not walk through and there is no suitable harbour for boats on the island itself. There are very few permanent habitants on the island, there is an hotel, a few houses and a few apartments for holiday use.
