A cormorant was tangled in fishing line and tethered to the tree--and would have died without help. Animal control was called but the agent had no way to get to the bird; besides, "There are alligators in that water." A bystander called this man, who brought his inflatable kayak, went right in and managed to free the cormorant. In the process, the terrified bird slashed his hand, which he shrugged off.
And then the cormorant did what all cormorants do: he dove underwater and did not appear for quite some time. For a few minutes we were afraid he had died, but then we saw a wobbly-looking bird emerge. I hope it was him and that he will make it. I hate to see animals endangered because of human carelessness.
That guy was really brave to risk being attacked by the alligators when he went to save the cormorant. In our seas the turtles risk their lives in that way, too, or when they swallow plastic bags thrown into the sea by careless ppeople.
What a great guy to help out that way. I think most people want to help animals when they can. I'm glad this cormorant had friends on shore. Good shot.
