The Birdman of Vero Beach

A park maintenance worker takes a break from emptying the trash barrels to feed the seagulls. "Oh, do you bring bread to feed them?" I asked naively.

"Buy bread to feed these guys? No, I got kids to feed! I feed 'em stuff I find in the trash. This was a half a loaf of bread. Somebody makes a couple of sandwiches, throws the rest in the trash. Last week I found sushi. I don't get sushi, but these guys did. They loved it!"

He described the birds personally. "See that one, he has a broken foot." I was glad to see the crippled bird right up front, getting his share.

"Some of them are too shy. They stay in the back and the greedy ones get all the food. Sometimes the little ones clean up the crumbs after the big ones fly away. And that big one? He's a dope. Always comes right at the end when the food's all gone."
Wonderful shot of his thoughtfulness! Terrific timing to catch the one in the air!

That's neat- less in the landfill and more for the gulls!

A nice man to go through all that to feed the gulls. Vero Beach was one of the places we visited when we were at Kissimmee on vacation in February.
