Lovely shot of the church. I like the stairs as I see them through the window that lead to what looks like a balcony in the other window. It seems to be lots of churches have lots of dwindling congregations these days.
@olivetreeann@grammyn Thanks for your comments. The interior is lovely, too, though I have not been in it recently. For many years it did not have a pastor and elders from other Presbyterian churches would preach sermons there. Many of the churches in Louisiana seem to be in decline.
@eudora Many "main-line" denominations such as the Presbyterian and United Methodist branches are in decline. It's a complex reason why in some cases but it's also not surprising as these branches have drifted away from the Bible and more into the culture. People are looking for something different and something more grounded from what the culture offers. Hopefully the direction of these churches will change before they fade out completely.
@olivetreeann I'm probably part of the problem as I left the Presbyterian Church and converted to Catholicism years ago. As I photograph historic churches, I look up whether Methodist congregations are still United Methodist and which Presbyterian branch a local church affiliates with. What I mourn most, however, is the decline of local churches of whatever denomination where children grew up learning faith and values from a caring community.
Lovely shot and composition. I think that the younger generation are too busy to be active in religion. Christine and I go to church very often because it is very close to our house but those present are mostly old people.
@eudora Moving from one denomination to another is not as uncommon as you think but that's not really a cause of decline. I totally agree with your feeling of loss for our children who grow up in a very anxiety riddled culture. Somehow those many years ago, the church offered hope, but now it's not looked at that way. Yes, so sad.
