A couple of months ago, I got a text from my landlord that said, “Sis, big mystery! Neighbors say they hear a random alarm going off in the middle of the night. They think it is coming from your house.” I assured Landlord that I only had one alarm set, that it was set for 5:15 in the morning on my phone, and I was pretty sure they couldn’t hear it all the way from my bedroom across the street into their homes to wake them up. So, I thought the issue was finished.
A couple of weeks later as I was on my way to town, a group of people whom I had never seen before were standing in the street in front of the house. As I began to pull out, they waved me down, so I stopped, thinking they were tourists looking for something. Nope. They were the Neighbors, and they wanted me to “Please do something about that alarm!” I explained again that I didn’t have one set. They said, “We heard it just last night as we were returning from dinner at 10:30! It is definitely coming from your house!” “Somewhere in the middle!” One of the others added, waving toward the house. I said, “Last night at 10:30, I was in the kitchen cleaning the bird's bowls. I didn’t have any music playing, the TV on, there weren’t any appliances on that would mask any sound, so if there had been an alarm going, I would have heard it. The only thing I hear at night is the Scops owl.”
“Well, it’s definitely not an owl, I’ve heard them before!” So I said, “Hold on.” And I googled "Scops owl call," played it for them, and got to watch a group of 6 very sheepish people apologize because, “Well, that sounds just like an alarm clock! And we’ve been waking up every night with that noise!” I said, “How do you think I feel! They are nesting in the orchard next to my house! You guys at least have some distance!” :)
Hahahahahahahahaahahahahah!!! oh boy I've nearly just fallen off my chair with laughing so hard!! What a silly bunch they must have looked!!! Quick thinking on your part! I'm now going to have to check out what Scops Owls sound like! And to think he's so innocent to all this!
@islambad What is funny, and a little embarrassing, is that after hearing it for a few weeks, my parrots decided to become daytime Scops owls. So now, if the Neighbors try to take a nap, they may very well hear the sound coming from my house!
Strange looking owl in this shot...really like how you positioned him in the shot...looking into the rest of it as if complaining about the neighbors and looking out to find out what's going on.
That is certainly a funny story! Nice shot of this amazing owl! I listened to their call on YouTube and it really does sound like some sort of alarm. This is the first time I've heard of or seen this type of owl. So interesting! :-)
