@kuva My debut photo as an official part of Five plus Two!
Solheimar, South Iceland
I'm currently in Iceland for a three week long study abroad program; we're kept on a busy schedule, so you'll have to forgive me if my next few photos stretch the boundaries of the themes a little.
I thought, since I'm in Iceland learning about it's history and people, it might be fun to act out Iceland's Roaring Twenties instead of America's (I also did not pack my flapper dress into my luggage... not sure what I was thinking??).
Icelanders traditionally lived in turf houses. Shortly after 1920, the urban population in Iceland first exceeded the rural population, as people moved from rural turf houses to cities. So, here's me, leaving my turf house for the wonders of the big city.
@amandal Thanks! Glad to be here!
Also glad to be in Iceland... it is amazing! Everything is breath takingly beautiful. Great for photographing, even better for just being and seeing. @maggiemae Ha! Exactly! We're actually going to stay a night in a turf house sometime on this trip (this picture is of a turf storage shed...), and we may even get a change to help out building one.
@kali66 It was actually kinda dreary inside, I thought. It's only a turf shed... But we're visiting a real turf house a some point! I think that one will be cozy!
So glad I could join you too! Thanks for having me. :) @francoise I am exactly twenty! Hehe. Great thought! Thanks. @mikegifford Thanks Mike! I'm so glad to be here. Dream come true. ;)
@jackies365 :) Thanks Jackie! Glad you think so! I'm super excited to be a part of it. @blueberry1222 Thanks Krista. I always try to keep things interesting.
What an amazing concept and one with which I was unfamiliar! That's so interesting and I have to wonder if some rural people still live in this fashion. It looks to be quite cozy...?
@Weezilou Yes! There are still turf houses around Iceland in use. We stayed in one for a night. June 1st of my project. (Still need to catch up on posting, so there will be another day about turf houses soon).
