I revisited the hornet nest that I found a few weeks ago, in a park tree. It seems that it has been broken, not sure when or how, if it was just it's age and weather or if it was due to some malicious act but it was a rather sad site with a few hornets still clustered inside, maybe protecting the queen or for some other instinctive reason. Sadly I only had my 85 mm lens with me so couldn't really get any better shots. Might try heading back later with a longer lens and see if I can get anything else of interest.
These types of hornets are MEAN! Some years ago I discovered a small nest in an arborvitae bush at the edge of our property. I slowly walked over to the nest to get a better look and one flew right at my face when I was about 15 feet away from the nest. Maybe park officials destroyed it before someone got stung?
