All three shots today are dedicated to one strange bug (insect?) I found in the garden the other day. Sort of looks hornet shaped to me, but with strange fuzzy appendages hanging off the back and a butterfly like proboscis. The shots aren't great, with most of them having large parts out of focus but I'd love if someone could identify this. http://365project.org/gardencat/this-and-that/2016-07-02 http://365project.org/gardencat/photshop-madne/2016-07-02
ETA: after more searching I'm thinking maybe some kind of moth?
Great series of shots, Joanne. My first thought was like you say some kind of moth. It looks fairly unusual and I would have thought it would be out on line somewhere. What ever he is, he's a great looking beastie.
@markp I found a site called Bug guide and very shortly after I sent them my picture someone identified it as a Melittia cucurbitae or in more common parlance a squash vine borer moth...nice to know maybe not so nice for my zucchini plants.
I am looking at your picture backwards, recent to oldest so maybe that will help make sense of what I am about to say? You are getting good at macros! Do you use macro adapters, extension tubes or macro lens?
@skipt07 I mostly use my Canon 100mm macro lens. I think some of the improvement may be just from practice and learning what settings tend to work best in a situation, but I also thinkmy recent change in equipment has helped too. I moved from my Canon 5D to a Sony 7R2. Ithas a higher pixel count and while I don't think that makes all that big a difference, in many photographs, the advantage to me for macros is that it gives you more "cropability". This means I don't have to get quite as close to my subject so I'm less likely to disturb my subject by shaking the bush, or letting my shadow fall across it, both of which often caused me to miss shots in the past.
