In some ways, shopping used to be an outing, as well as a way to get things you needed but, nowadays, so much more comes to us in little packages stuffed into our community mail box. And, if I want to feel really nostalgic, I'll also start dwelling on those days when mail was actually delivered right to our house.
Don’t your postmen put your stuff through the letter box on or near your front door ??
Years ago, I delivered newspapers and they went through the letterbox. I was always amazed watching American films how lazy your paperboys were, just cycling past and throwing the papers on to the front lawn as they passed.
There is still a milkman around here too.
@markp Many years ago they used to deliver to the door and either shove them through the mail slot or else leave them in a metal box you would have attached to the wall beside the front door. Then, somewhere around 25 years ago, in any new housing developments going up, they started putting in these community mailboxes, to serve several houses ( maybe 20 to 30) and they never did any door to door deliveries in those neighbourhoods and, slowly they began to put the boxes in older neighbourhoods too so, little by little, all door to door was phased out. No milkmen for AGES. I guess in suburbia at least milk men have been replaced by the corner stores which seem to be open 24-7.
We still get home delivery where I live but I know that in all the new developments they have community mail boxes. All we get is junk mail anyway so I’m not sure I’d miss home delivery. As for shopping, I do all mine on Amazon. I never liked malls much.
All our mail is delivered to the door but these days there are many more packages, as opposed to letter, than previously. I do a lot of my shopping online these days. I still don’t like mixing with crowds in shops. I love this shot btw.
