The Murray river runs through Echuca and divides the 2 states of Victoria & New South Wales. In 1864 the wooden wharf was constructed at the same time as the rail system was built. Echuca was the only inland port which was a hub for all the paddle steamers ferrying wool etc from the farmlands. It stopped being used in the 1920's and soon fell into disrepair. In 1968 they started restoring it and it's now a great tourist attraction with several paddle steamers restored too.
