Grey. Dull. Like My Soul. by graemestevens

Grey. Dull. Like My Soul.

We are still in the grip of a storm, albeit as it winds down (said the eternal optimist). This was taken at Stent Road in Coastal Taranaki. Many moons ago I went to school with someone from out this way. Their house was about 2 minutes from where this was taken but we lost touch when they went feral. It's also a "World Famous in New Zealand" stretch of road for it's surfing locations and is known as "Surf Highway." I do not know how to surf and am still of the opinion that as soon as you put your foot in the water you are something else's lunch...and, having once worn a wetsuit, I can honestly say when clad in such attire I have a tendency to look like a rubbish bag full of ferrets struggling for escape.
Haha...ferrets..? It is an awesome B&W..super contrasts!
October 8th, 2014
@nanderson Thanks very much - unfortunately they nibble in all the wrong places!
October 8th, 2014
Jae
LOL - I did the wetsuit once too - no need ever again!
October 8th, 2014
Great shot! I want to learn to scuba dive, but the thought of a wetsuit makes me feel like hiding in the dark corner of my closet.
October 8th, 2014
Title is funny and sad. Great rocky shoreline.
October 8th, 2014
Beautiful shoreline, love the detail in the waves.
October 8th, 2014
Gorgeous capture of a beauty of a coastline.
October 8th, 2014
Dan
I like the title and can relate completely. I love the ocean, just wish it was closer. someday... Nice capture of the waves and great processing Fav
October 8th, 2014
Moody. Nicely done.
October 8th, 2014
Fantastic shot, love the shoreline, and I like black and white too. Your title and commentary (as always) made me smile.
October 8th, 2014
Just love your prose. You must write a book! Great shot, and my mental picture of you in a wetsuit is something I don't need!
October 8th, 2014
Great shot and great story, .. It's a pretty grey sort of a day..
October 8th, 2014
So it's not so much the biting and struggling to escape....have you ever smelled a ferret? They are quite....well let's stick with ripe shall we.....beautifully moody shot.....
October 8th, 2014
Greame in a wetsuit - that could be your next "taken" photo! You are welcome!

Nice moody shot, btw... anything, but "dull'.
October 8th, 2014
@lifepause They're awful things. There just isn't enough mind bleach...
@spikez Thanks very much - my dark hiding corner is getting very full at the moment without having to think of wetsuits again!
@amandal Thanks you very much - just one of those days!
@kt8ird Thanks very much :)
@bigugly Thank you very much, appreciated
@drfleury14 Thanks very much indeed :)
@mamamayerle Thank you very much :)
@ukandie1 Thank you very much - pleased to be off assistance
@888rachel Thank you very much - and it's a mental picture I don't need either, especially as I've seen the real thing!
@julzmaioro Thanks very much...will the sun ever be back?
@deak68 I must admit I have not smelled a ferret. That's a bit like asking someone if they've ever licked a hamster...and thank you very much :)
@eyeamlisa I think not - not even editing could hide the horror! And thanks very much indeed :)
October 8th, 2014
Don't worry, Graeme - the sun will shine again soon! Great shot! :)
October 8th, 2014
And, you made me laugh, btw! :)
October 8th, 2014
@juliedduncan It better, or else. And pleased to be of assistance ;)
October 8th, 2014
Fantastic - I love the way you have frozen the water. It may be gray, but I certainly don't think it's dull!. And I laughed about the wet suit!
October 8th, 2014
@tabarlett Thanks very much - when I wore the wetsuit there were witnesses. They didn't laugh!
October 8th, 2014
Awesome B&W! When I think of New Zealand and Australian waters, sharks always come to mind!
October 8th, 2014
@harbie I think every photo could benefit from the addition of sharks ;) And thank you very much
October 8th, 2014
Beautiful coastline, but the beach looks a tad uncomfortable in this spot. I envisage a sharp rock or two in the nether regions if one considered sunbathing there! I also admire your prose, have you ever considered writing a blog?
October 8th, 2014
@tomtom It's certainly not a beach that I'd choose to lie naked on...I did keep a blog of sorts when we were travelling. 7 years of travel, photos and inane thoughts for family and friends so that they could see who I'd offended, burned, maimed and what country I'd try to conquer. I wouldn't know what to write about now!
October 8th, 2014
Such a bleak image -- captures your mood well, I think. I'd read your blog -- what an imagination you have!
October 8th, 2014
Love that rocky shore and those cool waves rolling in, so hot, dry and windy today this is a breath of fresh air for me.:)
October 8th, 2014
So, if the title is intended to be satirical, I agree. This shot is ANYTHING but grey and dull - as is, I presume, your soul. See you in hell, as you so kindly mentioned on one of my pics! Happy to have company.
October 8th, 2014
you are such a nutbar - as if a shark would want you for lunch - spit you out it would hahahahaha - anyway - I like this but am suffering from the image of you in a wet suit - actually wet suits are unattractive at the best of times
October 8th, 2014
From buttocks to boulders and beaches .. Beautiful capture.
October 8th, 2014
wow the ocean is amazing!
October 8th, 2014
The thought of you in a wetsuit before 7am is too much for me. I smiled and giggled. Apologies. Liking the shot though. And I'd read a blog too....
October 8th, 2014
Ahhh, all hail the master of simile!! I feel just the same about sea-water above my ankles. Love your shot.
October 8th, 2014
I love the textures in the rocks. I would read your blog too, you have quite a voice, as my writer mother would say.
October 8th, 2014
Sue
Love the b&w Graham ... your description of your self made me laugh. I recall wearing one in Kiakora to swim with the dolphins last year ... I looked like the Michelan man bobbing about in the ocean. To top it off there was a huge swell from the storm the day before & as I 'gracefully' slipped into the water I lost sight of all the other swimmers. Hence an ensuing panic attack ... in my head ' i'm not putting my hand up for help, I can swim to the boat ( it's drifting away from me) ... eventually get to the boat, scramble aboard, which must have been quite a sight. Husband who was going in with me, had stayed on the boat, tying his camera to his wrist. I had a few words for him, hahah
October 8th, 2014
that rock looks like Neptune coming out of the sea
October 8th, 2014
@taffy Thanks. Dry much indeed...so I need to find time for a blog, work, photos...sigh ;)
@hermann What I wouldn't give for hot and dry, just for a day at least...and thank you :)
@voiceprintz My should is far from dull and grey, although last year we were heading away on holiday and had stopped at a cafe for some lunch. I ordered a macaroon and the waitress asked what flavour I'd like, so I let my 14 year old daughter choose. She promptly asked if they had any blackberry ones as it would be "black, just like dad's soul" How we laughed :) And I look forward to sitting next to that fire and having a chat!
@annied Yes, I'm a complete and utter nutter...I'd probably eat the shark...as for me in a wetsuit, as they say in these parts..."yeah nah". And I rather liked that big rock...
@motherjane Thanks very much...just as well I have buttocks like rocks then... ;)
@tatopaz I'll pass that on to Mother Nature... ;)
@newbank I definitely didn't giggle when I saw myself in it...and I'd have no idea what to write about!
@golftragic It's just not natural! And thanks you as always :)
@jess1204 I enjoy writing but have no idea what I could possibly write about! Also, thank you very much
@redpants LOL, I know what you're saying. Mind you, when I wear a wet suit agree peace shows up...quite bizarre really! thanks very much as well.
October 8th, 2014
@graemestevens I do indeed like the big rock - I am however concerned about the mental stability of the folk here who seem keen to read a blog written by you - what in the duck is wrong with them you wouldn't catch me reading anything you wrote - oh and you must tell me about the school friend who went feral Lol
October 8th, 2014
@annied I'd love to tell you about the old friend, but that would involve writing something down and we all know you wouldn't read it ;)
October 8th, 2014
@graemestevens yeh true - maybe you can put it to music and I can listen
October 8th, 2014
@annied Yes, why not. I play music like I wear a wetsuit. Badly.
October 8th, 2014
@graemestevens I listen badly so it would probably be ok
October 8th, 2014
Sam
Why wear a wetsuit when you enjoy showing your nudity so much?
October 8th, 2014
@gigiflower Ah, the zombie ;) Although you do raise a valid point...believe it or not I look better naked than in a wetsuit!
@annied 1,000 monkeys typing for a 1,000 years...we might produce an aural masterpiece!
October 8th, 2014
@graemestevens hahahahaha
hmmmm - naked/wetsuit - have to ponder that one @gigiflower
October 8th, 2014
@annied @gigiflower Ponder away...the difficult part was getting out of the damned thing...horrific
October 8th, 2014
@graemestevens now that I know about hahahahaha - not from personal experience but from watching daughter - taking on and off is strenuous exercise
October 8th, 2014
@annied all I can say is never again!
October 8th, 2014
@graemestevens LOL don't blame you in the least
October 8th, 2014
@annied The "snap back" was the killer...
October 8th, 2014
Sam
@annied @graemestevens I won't be pondering your nudity or your ferrets in your wetsuit!
October 8th, 2014
@graemestevens Bahahahahahahahahahahahahaha - they really are a ridiculous creation
October 8th, 2014
@gigiflower @annied It's probably wise not to ponder it. I know I won't be.
October 8th, 2014
@graemestevens I do like to ponder - but - I will soon be distracted and be pondering something else so all is good @gigiflower
October 8th, 2014
@gigiflower @graemestevens oh dear - I must go and find my netball attire and find my motivation - a game at 9pm is difficult to get excited about hahahaha - enjoy the rest of your evening
October 8th, 2014
@annied @gigiflower I dread to think. I also shall be pondering other things. Apparently my manager is visiting next week, along worth the national sales manager, to have a chat with me and "hear and understand" my reasons for not taking a job in the company that I do not want, have no interest in and does not advance my career. It's going to be a fun week.
October 8th, 2014
@annied Have a super fab and entirely enjoyable game
October 8th, 2014
@annied @gigiflower @graemestevens No need to ponder. I am certain EVERYONE looks better in the nude than in wetsuits.
October 8th, 2014
Soul can never be dull, so is this shot.
October 8th, 2014
@newbank @annied @gigiflower That is an excellent point!
@yaorenliu Thanks very much :)
October 8th, 2014
@newbank @gigiflower @graemestevens I would argue that point - there are some I know I would certainly prefer hidden in a wetsuit hahaha
October 8th, 2014
@graemestevens I will try and be fab and enjoy thank you kind sir lol about to unimpress lol
October 8th, 2014
Sam
@graemestevens I was wondering what happened to your job situation! Do tell :)
October 8th, 2014
Sam
@annied @graemestevens @newbank Absolutely agree with you Ms Annie.......definitely some that ARE better tucked away in a wetsuit :)
October 8th, 2014
@gigiflower Yes do tell Mr S. Hope its improved. Maybe rather than thinking about everyone being naked, think about them all in wetsuits?
October 8th, 2014
Sam
@newbank Aaaahhhh feeling much better with that thought!
October 8th, 2014
@gigiflower You could use this technique next time you have one of those management meetings?
October 8th, 2014
Beautiful shot in b&w :)
October 8th, 2014
Oh you crack me up - I got a mental picture of you in a wetsuit, full of ferrets................! Much better to discuss this stormy image! Posting it in black and white adds to the stormy ambience!
October 8th, 2014
Excellent shot Graeme...love the water...and the tones and texture you achieved in the rocky shore is spectacular!
October 8th, 2014
no I don't believe it, your soul cannot be dull married to your lovely wifey and having such wonderful acquaintances and banter on here. I like the portrayal of the storm ad its effect on the sea well done you
October 8th, 2014
@annied @newbank @gigiflower Nothing has changed with my job situation other than the continuing attempts of management to convince me to change roles, to go into a role that would bore me senseless, that I'm not interested in and that would see me stuck in an office all day which is certainly not for me. I'm a free spirit baby and and I need to soar... ;) Maybe I should wear a wetsuit when they visit...
@shawnasays Thank you very much :)
@lynnilou Thank you kindly...and no one needs to discuss or think about me in a wetsuit!
@tasian Thank you very much indeed, very much appreciated :)
@pinkpaintpot It's probably a tad more psychedelic but it was just one of those days ;) And thank you very much :)
October 8th, 2014
Wear a wetsuit. I'm sure it would help.
October 8th, 2014
@newbank I think I just might have to
October 8th, 2014
Beautiful! I love the coast line. I'd rather be wet on the shore than in a wet suit in the ocean :-)
October 8th, 2014
wonderfully dramatic. I think the ocean is at its most amazing in a storm
October 8th, 2014
@overalvandaan Thanks very much and I could not agree more
@roseolivia Thanks very much - I love it when it's rough and ready!
October 8th, 2014
Hardly tropical island beach stuff but very dramatic as the west coast beaches can be! I feel the same way about lunch!
October 8th, 2014
Wet suits are hardly the best look in the world........every lump & bump on view! Your shore line is dead straight so you cracked it there. The cold, cold sea........you can keep it but must say you have caught every wave & splash perfectly....brrrr!
October 8th, 2014
Lovely textures
October 8th, 2014
@graemestevens I will think about you any way I see fit thank you very much even if it dies send me to the psych ward - where no doubt I would run into you and you would steal my straight jacket
October 8th, 2014
@maggiemae Thanks very much :)
@happypat It wasn't the nicest weather, and thanks very much :)
@shepherdmanswife Thank you very much :)
@annied I'm in the padded room, third on the left
October 9th, 2014
@graemestevens yep saw you through the peep hole as I was doing my rounds - I am a doctor you know - I find the straight jacket interferes with my job though
October 9th, 2014
@annied For some reason I don't believe you...
October 9th, 2014
@graemestevens oh ok I am not really a doctor I am an astronaut
October 9th, 2014
@annied Ah okay, I appreciate your honesty ;)
October 9th, 2014
@graemestevens I thought you were the type who valued honesty
October 9th, 2014
@annied oh yes. Quite a lot
October 9th, 2014
@graemestevens say it straight - that's what I like hahahahaha
October 9th, 2014
i love swimming in the sea but we have less things likely to eat you in it here. nice shot - looks cold and blustery
October 11th, 2014
@jaynspain Thanks very much, it was a horrible day
October 11th, 2014
I do so appreciate the cut of your jib, my good fellow me lad! :-p You are a treat to read.
Oh, and the picture didn't hurt, either... :-)
October 15th, 2014
@bankmann Thank you mostly kindly good sir
