Wiz by graemestevens

Wiz

I find myself inspirationally challenged today, so here is Wiz, one of my two retired/rescued Greyhounds. Wiz now weighs in at 36.5kg which is 500 grams heavier than his optimal "race weight". He has been off the track for 3 years now but was once clocked at 62km (38.5 miles) per hour. These days he will wake for food and a walk, but the remaining 22 hours of the day are spent either sleeping or wandering around the garden urinating on everything. He also has the ability, when fed chicken, to completely clear a room. He is also placid, loving and far to large to share a sofa with.
He looks like he spots something!! Great shot.

He's gorgeous! I love his color and markings.
November 10th, 2014
@aecasey Thanks very much - our other one is a black, but when we're out and about or doing fund raising it's Wiz that gets all the attention!
@aecasey Thanks very much - he was staring intently at his next target I think

Wonderful portrait and wonderful story. My standard poodle used to love to chase a greyhound around the dog park, so much fun. I really like the sharp details against the blurred gray background. His sweet face gets a fav from me

@trinda Thank you so much, much appreciated :)
November 10th, 2014
So handsome and enjoyed the info too! Sounds a lot like Ami aka Swift Am I. She was also a rescue. Now 12 years old. She has been retired since she was 2 years old. Her racetrack closed down. Her day sounds much like the day you described for Wiz. Thanks for stopping by! Fav!!!
November 10th, 2014
@wannabe Thank you very much - always nice to "meet" other 'Hound People' :)
November 10th, 2014
He is so handsome!!! I've always wanted a Great Dane, or a Great Dane/Lab mix. They are awesome, and so loving. Great shot!
November 10th, 2014
Handsome fellow, well-captured!
November 10th, 2014
@tabarlett Thank you very much :) Great Danes are awesome beasties
@juliedduncan Thanks very much - he takes after me ;)
November 10th, 2014
Wiz has a gentle face - like the light on top of the head! All what you say is what I have learnt too about them! Don't need much exercising but take up a lot of couch space!
November 10th, 2014
@maggiemae He's a gentle giant really - and yes, all he does is lie about, no barking, no energy expended...in fact there are days when you wouldn't even know we have dogs!
November 10th, 2014
He's beautiful. Love the close-up pov and the clarity. Fav.
November 10th, 2014
@kareenking Thank you so much :)
November 10th, 2014
What a gorgeous coat and animal. Nice portrait.
November 10th, 2014
what fantastic brindle colouring :D he looks rather naughty though!
November 10th, 2014
Lovely colours, especially the eyes. Shows a big heart that you have 2 rescue dogs. Your reputation is slipping!
November 10th, 2014
@888rachel I keep telling people that I'm a big pussy cat but they won't listen!!! And thanks very much :)
@amyleewinfield Thanks - I've been told it's a 'Caramel Brindle'...and yes, he has his moments...
@bigugly Thanks very much :)
November 10th, 2014
Wiz has most beautiful eyes and lovely markings. I am sure she was happy to be rescued from racing and given free run in your garden. Our dog who weighs only 2.9kms and came from save -a-dog and is eminently more suitable to share a couch with I think.
November 10th, 2014
@lwain Thanks very much :)
November 10th, 2014
Lovely story. He is a handsome pooch! Photo is well taken, great pet portrait.
November 10th, 2014
Sweet shot! I love the pattern of his fur! You did a wonderful thing adopting him!
November 10th, 2014
Great portrait! Rescues are the best!
November 10th, 2014
Cool shot and background story.
November 10th, 2014
Wiz looks far too sensitive to have been a racing dog... Well done for giving him a loving home.
November 10th, 2014
Oh what an incredible shot!!!! Love it, instant fav
November 10th, 2014
@kt8ird Thanks very much :)
@eyeamlisa Thanks very much - he's a fairly awesome hound
@angeliekevl They are indeed and thank you very much :)
@ukandie1 Thanks very much :)
@vignouse He's less sensitive more slightly dense...I'm sure his thought patterns are more than disrupted...
@leanne333 Thank you so much :)
November 10th, 2014
Well, it's about time Graeme. I have been waiting with bated breath for a glimpse of your fur kids expect Wiz's companion tomorrow. I am considering a rescue greyhound but have only two lounge chairs and already two dogs so maybe in the future. Lovely capture of Wiz :))
November 10th, 2014
such a sweet face.
November 10th, 2014
What a great name and great looking doggie. His face is so expressive.
November 10th, 2014
I love your description of him! And it's a great portrait.
November 10th, 2014
Great portrait...
November 10th, 2014
@hermann Thanks very much - Lucy is notoriously difficult to get a decent shot of, not only because she's solid black and glossy but because she seems to know when the camera is coming out and makes a run for it!
@brigette He's a right soppy git
@dibzgreasley Thanks - his 'real' name is Wizard as his racing name was Wizard Appeal.
@taffy Thank you very much on both counts
@mukeshpapd Thanks very much :)
November 10th, 2014
Adorable, I wonder if you both enjoy a race together.
November 10th, 2014
@yaorenliu He still likes a good run down at the beach...I tend to stand and watch in the hope that he'll come back...
November 10th, 2014
Great dog, and good on you for giving him a home, I have had dogs all my life but never had a Greyhound, but I have friends who have done the same as you and say they are a very laid back dog when finished with the track...Fav
November 10th, 2014
@graemestevens hahha. Well i got that totally wrong!!
November 10th, 2014
@tonygig Thanks very much - excessively laid back!
@brigette He's curled up next to Kim at the moment on the sofa. I'm on the floor. Sigh.
November 10th, 2014
Whiz has earned his name then...such a fast runner in his time, certainly deserves his lolling about days now. He looks a wise old boy.
November 10th, 2014
@happypat I wouldn't go as far as wise...he still has a tendency to walk into lamp posts and get tangled in his bedding...but he is lovely :)
November 10th, 2014
Grea shot. They do make fantastic pets too. Although he does sound like my Lab. Given the chance he will only get up for food.
November 10th, 2014
@karlow75 Thanks very much - Labs are notorious foodies. I always wanted a lab but my wife wouldn't let me call it Meth...lab...sigh. i'll see myself out.
November 10th, 2014
i love that face I do indeed :)
November 10th, 2014
oh - I love the way you have photographed it too
November 10th, 2014
He's a great looking hound but then again I'm incredibly biased towards hounds of the larger/faster types. We have Three sofas one for each dog and one for my wife and I :-)
November 10th, 2014
is it a grey hound Graeme? my friend has adopted one. such chilled out loving creatures. 38.5mpg is very impressive.
November 10th, 2014
@chippy1402 It's the only way it can be done - in this house there are beds in every room and out on the deck as well...and thank you very much
@annied He's a lovely boy...and thanks you kindly nice lady
November 10th, 2014
@andrewkru He's a greyhound - we have two, both are lazy, loving, laid back...the perfect couch potato
November 10th, 2014
@graemestevens lol almost read nice as old - but cool that I am a lady hahahahahahah
November 10th, 2014
@annied I couldn't face the thought of thinking of you as a man. Some things are just a whole lot of wrong.
November 10th, 2014
@graemestevens yeh I hesitate to agree - but - I have had wine with lunch today and it has made me somewhat agreeable for the moment - so - there ya go :)
November 10th, 2014
@annied I wish I'd had lunch with my wine today...
November 10th, 2014
@graemestevens hahahaha sometimes just wine works for me LOL
November 10th, 2014
@graemestevens hahaha, if I ever get another one, that is at the top of the list.
November 10th, 2014
@karlow75 Pleased to be off assistance :)
@annied "Sometimes"...Pfft.

Such a beautiful portrait!
November 10th, 2014
He's got such sad eyes but he's lovely and this is a Fav
November 10th, 2014
Graeme, what a lovely brindle greyhound. Our neighbour had one years ago and my two girls supplemented their pocket money by walking him after his owner's legs were amputated due to diabetes. Ivy was a wonderful dog that we all loved.
November 10th, 2014
What a gorgeous face, love the clarity in that fur!
November 10th, 2014
Great dog portrait. love the detail and the expression Graeme. Fav

November 11th, 2014

November 11th, 2014
@golftragic That's sorted then...phew
@jaynspain Thank you very much - of all the dogs I have the pleasure of living with, he's in the top 2
November 11th, 2014
I love how you've picked up the nuances of colour shading in his coat - a beautiful portrait
November 11th, 2014
@essafel Thanks very much - my dumb luck masquerading as skill again!
November 11th, 2014
Love his coloring!
November 12th, 2014
@harbie He's very pretty for a boy...
November 12th, 2014
Beautiful pooch...rescue pups are the best. We have a lab mixed that completed our family that we rescued.
November 13th, 2014
@amandal He is a beautiful boy - thanks
November 13th, 2014
Jo
A really lovely shot of this beautiful animal, and I enjoyed the back story.
