Weta by graemestevens

Weta

The Weta is a bit of a New Zealand icon - well, the real ones are anyway. They mate for life and travel in pairs, so if you see one you can almost guarantee that there is another nearby. We have plenty of them in our garden, which is where I prefer them to stay.

My other the shot for the day, for the Fiveplustwo theme of "Innocence" (yeah, right...from me?) can be found here:

attractive little buggers, eh?

Don't see many wetas down here but I remember them when we lived in Auckland. One jumped out from a curtain and landed on my nose!
March 26th, 2016
@maggiemae They can certainly jump well - we have loads in our garden, you can hear them moving about at night if you stand and quiet
@northy Yeah...nah...
March 26th, 2016
I just had a look on google, as I thought you were taking the mickey with this weta, but it actually exists. Like a grasshopper, beelike thing.
March 26th, 2016
@overalvandaan Not at all - the real thing...there's one variety aptly named the "giant weta" which gets bigger than your average mouse. Then there's the cave wetas...
March 26th, 2016
In copper this looks cute, but not sure I want to see the real thing!
March 26th, 2016
This one looks very cool.
March 26th, 2016
@gazdi Thanks very much - the real ones are somewhat more "squishy"
@ukandie1 Plenty of people are terrified of them, they don't bother me too much...
March 26th, 2016
Ouch I looked them up finally and hastily closed all the NZ job search tabs in my browser.
March 26th, 2016
Love love love
March 26th, 2016
@gazdi They're not that bad - you can hear them coming
@annied Thanks thanks thanks
March 26th, 2016
@graemestevens welcome welcome welcome
March 26th, 2016
Super clarity and crispness.
March 26th, 2016
Redeeming qualities or just bug?
March 26th, 2016
A clever depiction of this little bugger. Kind of glad I can't hear them coming.
March 26th, 2016
ooo love it
March 27th, 2016
Just looked up weta. I thought it was a acronym that Peter Jackson used for his shop. NOPE.. Think I may have nightmares now.
Anyway, love the pic of a copper one.
March 27th, 2016
@dyanstevens Definitely not an acronym...good luck with that sleep ;)
@carla42 Thanks very much :)
@rosiekerr I much prefer to know where they are at all times...
@joysabin Redeeming qualities - nicely keeps other bugs at bay
@bigugly Thank you kindly good sir
March 27th, 2016
Nice
March 27th, 2016
googled them...wow...they are a big bug...and rather cool also...like this artwork....
March 27th, 2016
They like to hide in my pegs box and hug my finger and give me a fright. What a lovely design.
March 27th, 2016
Love weta's are pretty creepy looking!
March 27th, 2016
Thank you for sharing this, Graeme; never seen one but we do have wireworms here.
March 27th, 2016
@wordpixman I had to google wire worms - the beetle looks similar to what we would call a Huhu Bug
@nickspicsnz They are indeed, but completely harmless...apparently ;)
@yaorenliu I've had a few give me frights as well!
@maree_sanderson Thanks very much - they are quite big. And quite cool.
@pdulis Thank you kindly :)
March 27th, 2016
Thank you Graeme. Always something new to learn, isn't there? That's one of the things I so enjoy about this project.
March 27th, 2016
Awesome looking creation and love the shadow!
March 27th, 2016
Tha copper one is cool. The real ones sound not so much but do they actually do anything disgusting, like bite or lay eggs I your ear or something, or do they just look big and creepy?
March 27th, 2016
super clarity on this shot.
March 27th, 2016
Superb shot, and insanely interesting for those of us who didn't know about your indigenous bugs... I think they sound kinda cool.
March 27th, 2016
Never heard of this bug and when I read up on it, I'm rather greatful I won't be meeting any. The cooper wire one is cool and I like the shadow of its but the real thing...nope, gives me the creeps.
March 27th, 2016
@juleshoogstraanderson They're relatively harmless but excellent at giving people nasty frights...
@kerosene They're very cool - creepy but very cool. And thank you :)
@blueberry1222 Thank you very much :)
@gardencat They just look big and creepy but are relatively harmless once you get over the way they look
@nicoleterheide Thanks very much :)
@wordpixman Every day is a school day ;)
March 27th, 2016
Like the shadow
March 27th, 2016
Excellent shot, love the contrast and shadow.
March 28th, 2016
Very cool structured bug, and good use of shadows in the image.
March 28th, 2016
Marvelous detail, lines, shadow
March 28th, 2016
I much prefer my bugs like this one, i.e. visible, clean and innocuous. I first heard of a weta in Murray Ball's great cartoons of Footrot Flats. There a humungous one (10 feet or so high) at Sir Michael Hill's golf course near Queenstown - same virtues as yours.
March 28th, 2016
@golftragic I haven't read Footrot Flats in far too long...
@jgpittenger Thank you very much :)
@taffy Thanks very much - limited time makes me normal!
@kategoring Thank you very much :)
@rachelwithey Thank you kindly :)
March 28th, 2016
Love the clarity, especially of the shadow.
March 28th, 2016
@graemestevens I'll second that motion, it was one of my real highlights.
March 28th, 2016
@noko411 Thank you very much :)
March 28th, 2016
I succumbed and Googled them too... ugh! I was amused to note in passing that Peter Jackson's digital special effects company is named after them!
March 29th, 2016
@vignouse It is indeed, they even make an appearance (on a hideously large scale) in his remake of King Kong.
March 29th, 2016
I hope this one is not life size. cool shot...
March 29th, 2016
@jack4john If we're taking about the giant weta, then yes, yes it is...frightening
March 29th, 2016
They must be like a coiled spring to jump about like they do...
March 30th, 2016
@rexcomu They're hard enough to deal with already without making any ' adjustments'...
March 30th, 2016
I love how you managed to get the shadow in there
March 31st, 2016
@breiavictoria Thanks very much - I used a ridiculously large light
March 31st, 2016
Love this --------------- very cool high key.
April 1st, 2016
@LaLa Thank you very much :)

In Norway, we used to say «Stilig!» (‘stylish’) before the English ‘cool’ («kul») came into vogue…

Stilig! :-)
May 25th, 2016
@bankmann Thank you very much :)
