The Weta is a bit of a New Zealand icon - well, the real ones are anyway. They mate for life and travel in pairs, so if you see one you can almost guarantee that there is another nearby. We have plenty of them in our garden, which is where I prefer them to stay.
I am a confirmed and certifiable nutbar with a penchant for skulls, bones, blood, guts, fire and anything slightly peculiar and mostly bizarre. I also...
@maggiemae They can certainly jump well - we have loads in our garden, you can hear them moving about at night if you stand and quiet @northy Yeah...nah...
@overalvandaan Not at all - the real thing...there's one variety aptly named the "giant weta" which gets bigger than your average mouse. Then there's the cave wetas...
Just looked up weta. I thought it was a acronym that Peter Jackson used for his shop. NOPE.. Think I may have nightmares now.
Anyway, love the pic of a copper one.
@dyanstevens Definitely not an acronym...good luck with that sleep ;) @carla42 Thanks very much :) @rosiekerr I much prefer to know where they are at all times... @joysabin Redeeming qualities - nicely keeps other bugs at bay @bigugly Thank you kindly good sir
@wordpixman I had to google wire worms - the beetle looks similar to what we would call a Huhu Bug @nickspicsnz They are indeed, but completely harmless...apparently ;) @yaorenliu I've had a few give me frights as well! @maree_sanderson Thanks very much - they are quite big. And quite cool. @pdulis Thank you kindly :)
Tha copper one is cool. The real ones sound not so much but do they actually do anything disgusting, like bite or lay eggs I your ear or something, or do they just look big and creepy?
Never heard of this bug and when I read up on it, I'm rather greatful I won't be meeting any. The cooper wire one is cool and I like the shadow of its but the real thing...nope, gives me the creeps.
@juleshoogstraanderson They're relatively harmless but excellent at giving people nasty frights... @kerosene They're very cool - creepy but very cool. And thank you :) @blueberry1222 Thank you very much :) @gardencat They just look big and creepy but are relatively harmless once you get over the way they look @nicoleterheide Thanks very much :) @wordpixman Every day is a school day ;)
I much prefer my bugs like this one, i.e. visible, clean and innocuous. I first heard of a weta in Murray Ball's great cartoons of Footrot Flats. There a humungous one (10 feet or so high) at Sir Michael Hill's golf course near Queenstown - same virtues as yours.
@golftragic I haven't read Footrot Flats in far too long... @jgpittenger Thank you very much :) @taffy Thanks very much - limited time makes me normal! @kategoring Thank you very much :) @rachelwithey Thank you kindly :)
@northy Yeah...nah...
@ukandie1 Plenty of people are terrified of them, they don't bother me too much...
@annied Thanks thanks thanks
