Train in waiting

Taken near the railway station in Bedford. This train was going nowhere. I didn't see any irate passengers but spent a while walking along the river and then back, and all the time the train was stationery. It gave me time to admire the reflection and test out whether it would make a good picture. This is one of the scenes that caused me some confusion at the start of the shapes, lines, spaces challenge - I cant decide whether the lines, or the shapes are the main focus of the scene here.

No time for photography today - serious progress had to be made on the decluttering front, as we are having a dinner party tomorrow night and two of the guests have elected to stay over. So there has been a lot of scurrying around getting things back in their places. A big box of assorted craft material was delivered to the church for the children's work today, there has been some inevitable landfill material (which grieves me) and as I write this, my husband is busy shredding away more of our archives.
It's an interesting shot. I keep being drawn to the square reflections on the water. As for your de cluttering, it does make me laugh! How much 'stuff' did you have?

@janemartin I think you are right Jane - shape wins the day. I have been in this house for 23 years of my married life and 23 years of two boys possessions have accumulated. It is strange that we have so much stuff, as I am not a shopper and certainly not an impulse buyer.

@helenhall well it's given me a chuckle! I have visions of all this clutter!

I have to hold my hand up and admit I'm a little confused by the difference between shapes and lines, especially as the reflections are various sized lines. All I can say with confidence, is that I really like this shot!

@suzanne234 I think it is a question of what stands out, and making a deliberate choice when framing and taking a photograph as to what you want to emphasise for the best composition. here, I think I was still undecided about whether I was looking for shapes or lines, and so as a result, they are equally present. I am pleased that you like it - thank you.

I like ALL the lines and shapes in this image, which carry over into the reflections. I also enjoyed your narrative and can identify with a constant need to 'declutter' from years and years of accumulating "stuff". It never seems to end. :-)

Good shot to "fill-in" while you declutter. I'd say shapes as well if I was to choose what was your main emphasis.

I really love this shot. fav.
We had a decluttering episode a while ago, but we still seem to have lots of 'stuff' Some of us decluttered more than others.

Its the train that pulls the eye, because it is the brightest part of the image which is most clearly identifiable. Then on looking over it we discover the reflections... very satisfying. It may be possible to express its interest in the lines and shapes that make up these things, but most of us don't go in for such close analysis! Unless of course we are doing abstract, then we have to.. . which probably explains the minority appeal of abstract images! Anyway, this is a very appealing image to an old ex-train spotter!, even if its not a proper train!

@yrhenwr thanks for the analysis and helpful comment. Me, I love a good abstract.

@gaylewood Gayle - I have been attempting to do this for years. Each time I get the boys to determine what they want to keep and what can go, I sort it out, wait to get rid of it and then promptly forget which pile is which. last time I labelled everything up with post it notes, and they all fell off. I daren't ask them again, so I hope I remembered right! there is still plenty more that could go.

@onewing thank for your comment and fav Babs. I smiled at "some of us decluttered more than others". I recognise that!

i like this shot, it is strong and has good lines. I am enjoying your commentary on how you are viewing your shots and the lines, shapes discussion. Hope your de-cluttering is making you feel lighter. I love a good de-clutter.

Nice composition and reflection.

methinks all shapes and lines and spaces are all in there, but the train is the main focus here so you can choose between lines and shapes. I'm no help, aren't i?

@summerfield Ha! that's ok. I'm past worrying, it is all about textures now ;)

@adayinmallacoota thanks Belinda - your comment is much appreciated. There is plenty more decluttering for me to come back to another time - but yes, it feels good to have done some.
