Happy New Year

We saw the new year in along with around a million other people (I don't even think I'm exaggerating that much for once) at the Silvester party in the Tiergarten in Berlin.

The strangely coloured object in front of the wheel is the big screen showing the bands playing in front of the Brandenburg Gate - about quarter a mile away - all packed solid with party people. The bands were a strange mix of euro-pop (Luna, anyone? Jurgen?) and 80's stalwarts (Bonnie Tyler, Pet Shop Boys) - all equally puzzling to our teenagers (although they did recognise BT's "Holding out for a Hero" from Shrek 2!

Last time I was in Berlin was in 1981. I was 17 and staying with a German family in Hannover for the summer. We visited a grandmother in Berlin. My clearest memories are of the wasps that plagued me in the caravan where we stayed and of getting stuck in the loo at the granny's appartment block in East Germany. Sorry, nothing else. No historical or political insights. Such is the 17 year-old perspective. I wonder what my teenagers will remember!
Are you coming back Helen or just popping by?! I went to Berlin in 1990 and then again last year. It was very different! I loved it last year but the kids decided that Berliners are too hard on themselves & we made them do too many museums. Boring hols for us - lots of revision and now Adam is poleaxed by hideous cold...
