YUM! Authentic Chinese food in Chinatown!

My six-word story is about eating some fabulous Chinese food in Chinatown in New York City Friday night. Above, my son is eating some noodles in peanut sauce. Lightest noodles I've ever eaten, so yummy. Center is my husband's sweet and sour short ribs (bones included). He didn't really like them, but they tasted quite good. He was just didn't realize the difference between ribs and short ribs. Bottom right is salt and pepper frog. I thought it would be like frog legs, but it was just little chunks of frog including the bones. It was fantastic, but hard to eat because of the bones. Top right was the pan fried noodles with pork that my kids got. It was rice noodles and tasted like fried rice (it seemed weird to not get rice with our Chinese meal). They also gave us orange wedges for dessert. It was unlike any Chinese food we have ever eaten, and not what most Americans think of when they think of Chinese food. It was hard to order, as we recognized nothing on the menu. Some of it didn't even have the English translation (and the people working there didn't speak enough English to explain what most of the entrees were). And, they only accepted cash. Obviously, this restaurant didn't cater to tourists, but to the local Chinese population. I loved all it. My middle son loved it, too, but the other three only liked the noodles in peanut sauce. But, it was a great experience.
Mmmmmm....maybe not the frog, though. Greasy:).

@juliedduncan @ceilidh @kwind @swilde Thanks!
@shaunasauna7 We didn't see the giant egg rolls! This place had nothing on the menu that we would consider Chinese food.

I'm afraid I like the "Americanized" Chinese food! Great collage! Impressed your son eats with chopsticks!

@kathysview He was the only one brave enough to try eating with chopsticks. We like the Americanized Chinese food, too, but I loved this. I'm an adventurous eater.

@digitalrn @sarasdadandmom It tasted great, it was just a little weird to have to pick the bones out of a breaded chunk of meat! LOL!

It looks and sounds a great gastronomic experience. We all like Chinese food. A great collage to tell the experience!

I don't know if I'd eat the frog- it reminds me of calamari and I don't like that. But those noodles (both kinds) sound yummy! Back in my college days, I had a friend who lived in the city and several of us from NJ would go in during breaks to hang out for the day. We always went to Chinatown for dinner- a little place way off the beaten path which had no menu at all and the locals playing card games while you dined! The servers came around with trays that had plates of freshly made goodies and you just pointed at the plate and they gave it to you. At the end of your meal, they tallied up the plates and gave you the bill! One time 8 of ate there for under $30! Years went by before I was back there- but when my son went to Pratt University in Brooklyn we took him and his roommate there for dinner. II was amazed I remembered how to find it. Even more surprising was that nothing had changed!!
