Sir Thomas Herbert’s House, Pavement by if1

Sir Thomas Herbert’s House, Pavement

127 - Across the road at the southern end of the Shambles lies this rather magnificent timber framed house, for which the earliest documentary evidence dates back to 1557, and which now caries the name of Sit Thomas Herbert, who was born in the house in 1606, and who went on to become a significant political figure at the time of the English Civil War.

The property is in the care of the York Conservation Trust, and is currently in use as a shoe shop (Jones Bootmaker).

Finally, an apology for the quality of this image, taken during a lull in yet another downpour of rain!
More beautiful buildings! I love it, and the history is so interesting. We have nothing so old here. I really need to get to Europe and see these things. I lived in Milan, Italy for a short time when I was a kid, but was too young to appreciate it. I would surely appreciate it now!

@clmiller

Thank you Caren, glad you like it. We are very fortunate here in York to have history going back to Roman times (AD71) that can still be clearly traced in the city - more images of our history to follow!

@jdcamdoc

Thank you Joanne - I suppose that after over 400 years it's no surprise that the building has a bit of a sag!

Luck enough to have been in the room on the first floor, and the slope is quite disorientating!

@collin

I think it must be fascinating to see the inside of some of the rooms in these old buildings, just to see what bits of the past survive

Hah, I know this building! And fine shoemakers they are indeed! My hubby bought a pair in this very shop when we lived in Yorkshire! Thanks Ian!

@bruni

Thank you Bruni, it's amazing how many of this style of building have survived in York - and I've even discovered a couple of new ones while doing this project!
