163 - After another detour from our journey around York city walls, we return to a hidden corner of them today.
South west from Bootham Bar, there is the largest breach in the wall for the passage of a road. Beyond that is a section where the wall walk is not open to the public (see http://365project.org/if1/365/2012-07-23). On the opposite side of the wall to my earlier shot is an area where a major archaeological excavation was carried out in the 1970s.
The rows of cobbles in the foreground marks the level of the defensive banks at different periods, from Roman times to around 1250AD.
The small building in the shade is the so called 'Anglian' Tower, although experts can't agree on it's true age. It is built in a gap in the Roman wall, and could date from the late Roman period (350AD), or later in the Anglian period (any time up to 650AD).
The wall in the upper right part of the shot is part of the medieval wall (around 1250AD). In the middle distance is the Multangular Tower, the western corner of the Roman fortress and the subject of a future shot in this series.
This is hidden away behind the library / council offices. For this viewpoint. you go through the small car park at the opposite side of the road to the Theatre Royal and bear left up the bank behind the council offices. This view is through the fence at the top. You may recognise the view better in http://365project.org/if1/365/2012-08-17, which is the way most people get to see this area
Thank you Jane, glad you are enjoying the tour! - and if the stones could talk, I think it would be a fascinating story. There are hundreds of years of history here, and so much will have happened in that time!
Most visitors see this from the opposite direction ( http://365project.org/if1/365/2012-08-17) but many don't bother because it is a dead-end walk. I have to admit that to get the view in this shot, I did have to pass a sign saying 'Don't climb on the bank'!
Thank you Deb, glad you like it! The tour of the city wall has been going in since http://365project.org/if1/365/2012-07-30, but I do get distracted by other things some days!

It's a very gentle bank at that point, and I didn't see the sign until I was on my way down! lol!
