167 - This shot of Lendal Bridge crossing the River Ouse contains two major strands of the history of York.
On the left, Barker Tower, with a small part of Lendal Tower visible on the opposite side of the river. In medieval times a chain would link the two towers to prevent any potential attackers entering the city by the river, and to enable any tolls on boats to be collected.
On the right is Lendal Bridge, Built in the 1860s to replace an earlier ferry service. The coming of the railways put enormous strain on the ferry service, and in 1860 construction started. Unfortunately, the original incomplete bridge collapsed killing 5 workers. A new design was then started, with completion in 1863. It is an iron bridge, with gothic design details. It was originally a toll bridge, but became free in 1894. It still plays a key role in York's transport network, now being part of the inner ring road.
I never knew the Ouse was such a large river or that it flows big and wide for so far (I know the Norfolk stretch) Great, Ian - I really like this shot.
Thank you Bob - you may not have many bridges in this style, but some while ago I came across someone from the USA on this site doing shots of the old covered bridges over there.
Thank you Debra - but this is a different River Ouse to the one you have Norfolk. This one starts north-est of York where several rivers from the Dales merge, and finishes when it flows into the Humber Estuary and past Hull.
Thank you, glad you like it!
Thank you Bruni, glad you like it! - and I agree, it was sad about the workers being killed - but life was much less valued then.

Thank you M C - although I've taken shots of this bridge before, I've never shot between the tower and the bridge, and it is a nice viewpoint.
Thank you Roslyn - I've never taken a shot between the tower and the bridge before, and it is a nice viewpoint.

Thank you Marie - it's an angle I've never taken this bridge from before, and it means the city wall towers are included too.
Thank you Lynne, glad you like it!
Thank you Jerry, it is an interesting bridge.
Thank you Rixtar62 - there are certainly lots of opportunities for good images in York.
Thank you Lora - I liked this angle because it allowed me to show the towers as well as the bridge.
Thank you Louise - it's strange that I've never spotted this gap to shoot through before, despite having done a number of shots of the bridge before.
