168 - York city walls continue south west from Barker Tower through an area of the city transformed by the coming of the railways.
The walls themselves were changed as well. Four arches were inserted into them, the first being towards the right of this shot to allow a road through. A second road arch and two arches for the railway lines to enter the original terminal station are found further along this section of the walls..
In addition to the original railway station and a later newer railway station outside the walls, and roads to give access to them, a railway hotel and offices were also built.
Fortunately the walls, though changed, survived, and now give impressive views of the surrounding buildings, and we will be looking at some of these in the coming days. This short section of the walls is also enhanced by small areas of garden.
How did I miss this one? You would never know that this was not the origional wall.. if you wouldn't say there were changes we wouldn't have noticed. interesting.
the old and the new together, traffic lights and signage against the backdrop of the beautiful old wall, wonderful shot Ian. I love the colour contrasts and textures....
There is still an almost complete circuit. I've been slowly recording an anticlockwise circuit of the walls, starting with http://365project.org/if1/365/2012-07-30 - but I do sometimes get sidetracked by other things!
Thank you Bob - we were very lucky the Victorians decided to keep it rather than demolish it. There were influential voices who wanted to do just that - but fortunately the decision was to keep it!
It was inevitable that more openings in the wall would be needed, and I agree, it is fortunate that the change were largely in keeping with the original structure.

Thank you, glad you like it!

Thank you Petaqui - the walls are a nice place to walk above and a bit away from the traffic.
Ian I fully understand the temptations of a 'side track' 8-)
Thank you Caren - but it's a shame we are having so many grey days. It's so much nicer with the sun on it!
Thank you Michele, glad you like it!
Thank you Brian, glad you like the view!
Thank you Marie - I see what you mean, it does meander across the landscape in a similar way, although this is on a somewhat smaller scale!
Thank you Roslyn. I hadn't realised until I started this series just how many views of the walls were obstructed by traffic lights and signs!
Thank you Howard!
Thank you Lynne - In the meantime I hope you can continue to enjoy the tour!
Thank you Jerry, glad you like it!
Thank you Louise - but it would have been nicer still with a bit of sunshine as well!
