211 - Lancaster was once an important port, and played a significant part in the slave trade. It's decline as a port was due to the silting up of the Lune Estuary.
By the estuary, in a building that was once a customs house, and in part of the neighbouring former warehouse, is the maritime museum.
These two shots show the former warehouse in which part of the museum is housed. Many of these warehouses survive beside the river Lune, and many have been converted into apartments.
The right hand shot shows a recreation of the interior as it would have been when in use as a warehouse, with the manual handling of produce lifted into the warehouse by the crane that you can see.
A fascinating museum and well worth a couple of hours to explore!
