York St John University by if1

York St John University

225 - York St John University began life in 1841 as an Anglican diocesan teacher training college, and for the next 130 years it specialised in training teachers. It was originally an all male establishment, with another nearby college founded a few years later to train women teachers. This was moved to Ripon in 1862.

St John's remained an all male college until the mid 1960s, and later, in the 1970's it merged with the Ripon college, which was later closed and all students moved to York.

It is now a University, and teaches a much wider curriculum, but some of the early buildings, like this one, are still in use
