Just a little history, not sure when they started underground mining but in the 1950-60’s there was a lot of strip mining. I think most of it was over by the late ‘70’s. A lot has been reclaimed but there are many “lakes”. Coal mining was big in southern Illinois but I believe most of it has stopped now.
Fulton County is located in the Military Tract of west central Illinois, and it has the duel distinction of being in one of the most agriculturally productive regions in the world as well as resting upon one of the richest deposits of bituminous coal. 'The geological history of bituminous coal in Illinois emerges out of a vast swath of time. Over five hundred million years ago the middle of what is now the North American continent was submerged under the Silurian Sea.
Probably more than you want to know!
