another bit of my history

this house is across from my mom. my mom who is 93 1/2 years old still lives in her house. she moved there in 1951. I grew up in this neighborhood that was loaded with kids. we contributed...there were 8 of us. I was a bit saddened to see the for sale sign on the house today. part of my childhood is going away. I know nothing stays the same but I don't like change. my mom is now the last remaining of the original residents of our street growing up. others have been sold but maybe it is because she is the last one that I feel so sad. maybe it's because the owner of this one always seemed so young for his age and then seemed so old so quickly. there were so many good times in our neighborhood. lots of kids to play with, parents with endless cups of coffee, bikes and later mini-bikes which were a bit of trouble at times but no one ever got caught because of the secret escape plan. face time was spent right next to each other and your phone went as far as the cord would allow. any parent could tell you what to do if you needed to be told and no one was offended. pre-minivan or suv we had pontiac wide track station wagons to cart our family of 11 to church on Sundays and back home to watch Lion's games. dinner was always at the table (a huge duncan phyfe) every night and the whole family sat down to it. it wasn't perfect but it was pretty darn close. wouldn't change it for the world!
What a wonderful story, Jackie. Great memories, vividly written.

Oh my, I do relate to this photo and your narrative. Love the little house. It's the kind of homes we knew as kids. Smaller than we have now. (Probably only one bathroom instead of two, three, or four!) Garages were in the back, long driveways were for skating and hopscotch, and more. Any parent on the street could discipline you, and everyone on the block knew everyone else! Oh, yes, I do miss those days and the neighborhood I grew up in. We drive by it now and then when we are in the area...... 2 hours north of where we live now. Such memories.

It is always sad to see the beautiful neighborhoods change. Hopefully they won't tear down the house and replace it.
