Memory Lane by janetb

Memory Lane

This takes me back to when young me, about 40 years ago, made it with love and a little felt, rickrack, yarn and thread. Pillow stuffing, too. In my then bedroom, I sat on the floor cross-legged sewing and stuffing hearts, stars and evergreen trees, carefully placing each ornament into the hope chest he’d gifted me. It sat pushed up against the wall in my tiny room, squeezed in between the sewing machine and the dresser. Cedar-lined with a pretty, padded tapestry top, that rich, dark Lane chest held our hopes and dreams. How I loved it — and him — and still do. We married soon after. Trips down memory lane, compliments of Christmas, make me feel all warm and fuzzy and blessed.
This is very dear!

What a lovely memory to bring out each year. When I was teaching - probably in the 80's to mid 90's (after which education ideas changed - and not for the better) I taught all my kids each Christmas to embroider or cross-stitch. The boys were really good at it. A lot of them would cross-stitch an ornament while others made a pillow (I did the sewing of the squares for them, but they then stuffed them and did the final closing) They gave up voluntarily lots of recesses and many times brought their lunch from home and would work on them. Have run into quite a few of them who tell me they still have them. Nice to help make memories.

@milaniet Oh, Milanie, I love your story. Thank you so much for sharing it with me! What a special thing for you to do for those children...I'm sure it had a tremendous impact on them in so many wonderful ways. I can tell by the stories you've shared with me over the years that you are a very, very special lady. I'm so grateful that our journeys crossed here on 365. It is a blessing to know you. I hope you had a Merry Christmas, and may God's blessings be upon you and your family in 2022 and beyond!
