Lingering by janetb

Lingering

Climbing clumsily onto the pool wall and stepping gingerly over emerging ferns and hostas led me to my five Mohawks. Gracie occupied herself with something interesting in the grass while I admired the pearly buds and fragrant flowers, tickled pink to finally see them! Last spring, the first after planting, we got only healthy leaves on these viburnums whose job it is to soften the fence line.

One of the nesting Red-tailed Hawks screamed overhead as it sailed across brilliant blue sky — not a cloud in sight. I scanned the tender new leaves of the nearby Japanese maple to see how they fared through the unseasonable freeze overnight — thankfully, so far, so good. Freshly-filled sugar water feeders hung idly, waiting for the arrival of the first Ruby-throated Hummingbirds and Baltimore Orioles. The Orioles get half an orange and a few dollops of grape jelly, too. They should get here any day now.

Joyful sights and sounds in the spring garden are many. I lingered until the phone rang. More joy — Sarah!
