Thank you, Lord, for the roadrunner soaking in the sunlight at the National Aviary.
I've watched many birds at the Aviary sunbathe, but this was the first time I've seen a roadrunner do it. Its disheveled appearance caught my eye, and then I noticed its wings held out to the side and upturned head. Exposing the feathers and skin to the sun's UV rays this way helps the bird to produce vitamin D, which aids the absorption of calcium and helps keep the bird healthy.
You know, I don't believe I've ever seen a road runner perching on a branch. They've always been on the ground when I've observed them. (Used to live in AZ and S. Cal) Such excellent lighting in this pic. Love the warm, rich tones.
great capture. Great details. This is the first time I have seen a roadrunner in a tree.
