my friends' little girls who came round to watch the rugby with lots of other people this afternoon. C on the left had made me lovely bright pink painted pig's face out of a paper plate and a yoghurt pot for its nose. Now it is proudly displayed on our kitchen wall.
Our friends Phil and Mary arrived at lunch time as they were staying with us for the night on their way back down to their home in Cornwall. Mary used to work with Graham until she retired about three years ago. Nowadays they live a life of tranquility on the coast. Always lovely to see them but I think that they were probably a bit shell-shocked by the end of the day following the arrival of nearly 30 people to watch the rugby. There were children running around, people shouting at the telly, much alcohol being drunk - wonderful!
In honour of Mothers' day, little children were taken home for bed by Dads early evening, the women broke out the fizzy wine, and a good old gossip was had by all.
All in all a most successful day. I was very pleased with the food I had made - lasagne, vegetarian lasagne, salad and Graham's home made focaccia all went down well. So did the dessert of zucotto semi freddo - a half frozen ice creamy/moussey concoction, the ingredients for which having caused me a bit of a headache over the past few days. It contains cherries soaked in amaretto, savoirdi biscuits soaked in Baileys (alas no creme de cacao) dark chocolate, vanilla and hazelnuts - yum! I haven't made it for a while but the fact it can be made and frozen well in advance, just needing to be taken out of the freezer half an hour or so before serving makes it a good one to do for events like this.
Fortunately the Italian themed menu didn't jinx England in the rugby - it's going to be an exciting game against Wales next Saturday.

It all sounds a day everyone would like to be present at....all mucking in , plenty of food & drink, fabulous! Glad your men did the decent thing too!!!
I *knew* that it would be a dessert I'd be interested in (although with the benefit of hindsight maybe the jinx carried over to the wales game). Sounds like a perfectly lovely day.
