fritillaria meleagris (snake's head fritillary)

It was a pleasant surprise to see this flower on the rockery this morning. We only planted them last year and I didn't think that the bulbs looked very good quality. I was probably right given that only one out of about 30 bulbs had flowered.

The whole plant is about 5 inches (12cm) tall and this flower is about 1 inch (2.5cm) long. They are native to the UK but I have never seen one growing in the wild.
Very pretty.
