This is a twofer. It is for my get-pushed challenge to do a reflection and for my lightamateur group. I wasn't totally successful with this. The dust that is either on the glass or in the water is annoying. But it was informative. I first tried to do this in daylight hours. I had problems with reflections as you can see. I tried again at night and had problems with light which I figured out but got reflections and what appears to be dust on the glass or in the water. Unfortunately I still do not have a lot of stamina so I can only work at it so long then I get tired. So I went with the daytime one light reflections and all. But it was fun. Next time I see someone do this I will have a great appreciation for their results.
Really impressive, Joan - Excellent choice for your get-pushed and the indoor lighting. Would like to try this sometime (soon I hope - while I still remember :) )
Which reflections did you want to get rid of. I like a little on the glass. Shows the glass surface. I find I get frustrated when it takes too many set ups and I give up, No good excuse except it's me. I will keep working though, just not all at once.
Glass is notoriously difficult to light... the professionals use several light sources and lots of carefully positioned reflectors and flags (negative reflectors used to block highlights), so there's no need to beat yourself up over this result ;-)). It looks as though you might have used a point light source here - a shoot-through umbrella or a soft box would have softened the result. I'll answer your mail in the week when i get time to work on the raw files.
Joan, i found that backlighting was the only way i could avoid hotspots on front of the glass. i fired a speedlight at the background and used white reflectors either side of the glass. Thank you for setting this for us.. it was most definitely a challenge for me.
I admire your tenacity to figure these things out. Me, I am very lazy if I attempt anything like this at all. If there's dust in the shot- I clone it out! In spite of what you've revealed as flaws, I still think it's a cool shot.
