My get pushed partner asked me to take a picture with bokeh. I take pictures that have bokeh but not intentionally because I usually end up frustrated. Sometimes when given a hard challenge I get it right out of the way but more often I put it off. Today with rain I wondered how I would get bokeh and a dull day. But I went shopping for a gift for my great grand nephew and brought him some card games. I put one on my dash board and hoped I could get some bokeh with the rain on the window. Didn't work that well so I added a little on my own. As I often say SOOC I am not that great but with editing I can get there. Hope you can see the bokeh> Well just pretend for my sake you can. OK
@susanharvey here is my answer to your challenge. I am now worried that some of my friends will see I struggle with bokeh and challenge me with the added no editing. Can we keep this just between us.
Good attempt/save Joan! I always think of it this way (and like you I don't intentionally set out to get it for the most part), but if there is light in the background (whether it's sunlight through the trees or candles, or lamps, etc.) and the subject is relatively close to your camera and the camera is focused on the subject, you will get some bokeh because the background will be blurred.
I like the pic Joan, but in answer to your title question... no. it's not bokeh! The trouble is that the term is often misused as a synonym for out-of-focus backgrounds when, in actual fact, it refers specifically to out-of-focus specular highlights - think out-of-focus fairylights. Well no doubt I've put the cat among the pigeons... again!
@vignouse I know this but too lazy to put out a bunch of candles. Cleaning my refrigerator. Found three open tubes of anchovy paste. So I was going for the blurred background. By the way I started with an ice coffee but I heard you in my head. lol
A fun capture, with or without bokeh! And I see that you mentioned iced coffee in on of your comments - did I remember to tell you I tried the DD butter pecan iced coffee and now I'm addicted?
Your great grand nephew will have fun playing the card game. What a great idea for entertainment while travelling. Great shot of this colourful pack, with or without the bokeh.
@joansmor It was a good try, Joan, but no, not bokeh. It took me a lot of tries to get the one decent shot I had with it in it. If it makes you feel any better, I wasn't successful with my flower in black and white either :)
What a great idea for a gift - looks like fun and makes travel time go faster for kids - you're one up on me if you can create bokeh with processing - I can't even do that! If it happens it's purely accidental even when I "know" the steps it takes.
I like the contrast between the colourful, fun box and the bleak day. Cool patterns on the windscreen, too, but sadly, I don't see the bokeh. Oh wait a minute . . . :)
For your challenge I have a choice for you - either take a picture that has a shadow or reflection as it's focal point or take a picture showing texture. I hope that one of these appeals to you.
