The San Salvador was commanded by Juan Rodriquez Cabrillo and arrived in what we now call San Diego in 1542. She was the first recorded ship to survey the southern California coastline. She is considered the founding ship of San Diego and the State of California. This replica was built here and first sailed last year. It will open to the public in about 2 weeks as part of the maritime museum. I went onboard when it was still in drydock and still under construction. It’s a 100 foot full-rigged galleon, a 10 foot draft, and a capacity of 200 tons.
What a beauty! Both the replica of the San Salvador and your picture of the (I'm guessing) San Diego Bay area. Love the clarity and the wonderful colors. Fav
As a fan of Tall Ships, I'm delighted to see this one will be based in SD! (Is it near The Star of India?) I hope it has a bright future ahead...and maybe this would be a great place to gather for a [photo shoot when it opens!
