Why do they cover bridges?

@777margo Well I never thought about that Margo! Had to look it up. They're covered to protect the bridge from the elements and also for protection for travelers.

@777margo @joysfocus Another reason for the covered bridges was to keep the horses from freaking out when pulling wagons across the bridge. I didn't know there were any in California - good find! One of the subjects I try to seek out when in New England.

@stray_shooter There are 12 covered bridges in California, surprisingly. This one in Knight's Ferry is one of the oldest. Built in 1864.
