One thing about my son that has been really consistent since he started exploring the world around him is that he wants to know how everything works. A common action whenever he’s been given a new toy - going back all the way to when he just started being able to use his hands - is to turn it around and study the back of whatever the item is. If it makes noise, he wants to discover why and from where it’s coming. If it lights up, he wants to see how. If water comes out, he needs to understand the way it does. Here he’s pictured with that last example, scrutinizing the hose that is used to wash and cool down the roof patio of our rental beach condo in Isla Canale. Beyond him, over those white spires in the background, is a sliver of a view of the Atlantic Ocean that touches Southern Spain between the Strait of Gibraltar and the border to Portugal. It’s an extravagant, romantic, stunning location to visit and we feel blessed to be here. But for him, the only thing that matters at that moment was how he could get a better spray of water out of the hose. He figured it out and I had to do a split collage of before and after because moments later he learned a stream of water doesn’t only straighten, but it’s aim for one’s face can be far too true!
