Trinity College - the largest of the Cambridge Colleges - was founded by Henry VIII in 1546. He combined two existing colleges (King's Hall and Michaelhouse) and seven hostels (Catherine’s, Garratt, Gregory’s, Ovyng’s, Physwick, St Margaret's, and Tyler’s). Readers of Susanna Gregory's 'Matthew Bartholomew' books will recognise some of those names. 32 Nobel Prizes were won by members of Trinity during the 20th century and six Prime Ministers were educated there. There is a fierce rivalry between Trinity and my old college, St John's which is just next door but I have a secret affection for it. Firstly, when I applied for post-graduate scholarships to St John's and Trinity I was offered one by St John's (my first choice and home to my PhD supervisor) but Trinity took the trouble to write me a letter saying that they would have offered me a scholarship if St John's hadn't done so. I suspect I have been a disappointment to both of them. Secondly, the porters are very friendly and cheerful - not always the case!
Henry VIII stands in the centre holding a chair leg - formerly a sword.
I have read about the Nobel Prizes won in Trinity - quite a feat! Now Henry VIII with a chair leg - haven't heard about that. Is there a three legged chair somewhere near? Beautiful stone work in this photo!
Another story I'm sure about the chair leg! Love hearing all these old names.....must be lovely to be all part of that....just reward for you working hard at school...your parents must have been very proud!
Beautiful buildings of course....must be inspiration to work your very hardest!
@padlock Oxford is older - Cambridge was founded by scholars who fled Oxford after two clerks were hanged for a murder they didn't commit (or something like that!) It was all to do with a power struggle between King John and Pope Innocent III. Of course older does not necessarily equal better! Trinity College Oxford is younger than Trinity College Cambridge.
nice one Judith. Happy New Year to you. I'm going to give a bit of a try at doing another project this year, maybe not daily...but something at least! we'll see how it goes when the travel gets busy!
Uni works really different in the UK than in The Netherlands. Our universities are huge, non-challenging and have no threshold for admission except a highschool diploma :-(
Beautiful buildings of course....must be inspiration to work your very hardest!
Nice composition Judith , watch those converging verticals !
