It's been a good year for catching up with people we haven't seen for ages - this time not for a good reason. It was my PhD supervisor's funeral. The church was packed and a bigger venue will be required for the memorial service. For a man who started life in very modest hard-working-class circumstances there were an inordinate number of titles amongst the pews including dames, knights and a baron. But he always championed opportunities for all and it was a very charming service devoid of pomp. The reception was held in the Master's Lodge at St John's College which was once his home. In other circumstances I would have jumped at the opportunity to show you the inside of what is an amazing building but (apart from the fact that it was packed with people) it wasn't really the occasion. All the furniture is old and beautifully polished and people were mostly hovering around wondering where they could put cups down. In the end they seemed to have decided that saucered cups were OK.
This is the chap you wanted the Times article about.......I fitting tribute to the man who helped & guided you Judith. I expect the calibre of your tutors at Cambridge were exemplary but it didn't mean you had to like them....obviously you did very much in this case!
Lovely black & white shot here to remember the sad occasion. Love the old photos in those lovely frames. I am very into old frames & always on the look out for nice ones to put my old photos in.
i can visualise the room and the event from your nicely chosen photo.. Lots of clicking cups on the saucers and great conversation. Difficult to clap though holding a cup and saucer!
