We were a little disappointed with St Nicholas' Cathedral primarily because they hadn't turned the heating on and it was freezing out (and in!). Also my protestant upbringing rails against the gold, marble and general excess of many Catholic churches (apologies to those that love them!) so I often struggle to really appreciate them. Heading upstairs improved my opinion though - not least because the exercise warmed me up - and also there is a beautiful painted ceiling and generally it was interesting to see the huge space from high up. In scales of ornateness the churches we visited are ranked St Vitus, St Nicholas and then Our Lady Victorious took it to a whole new dimension with baby Jesus dressed up in a magnificent gown (if I have room a photo will follow).
The day took an excellent turn when we stumbled over a restaurant I had found in my trusty Top 10 guide (we stumbled over most places - neither of us doing too well with navigation) and it was eccentric, friendly and warm (and great value as all the places were). It was like eating in a gypsy caravan. We later rushed in to a really lovely cafe to avoid the snow and then booked an excellent meal in the evening. I need to go on a serious diet....
I would agree although at least the Catholic Church has money to pay for them. My mum can't seem to do enough car boot sales to keep longton Methodist going.
Well I thought you would be well used to a bit of excess glitz Judith or did they have no glamour at Larkhill......Winckley Square was quite fancy with lots of gold leaf!! I knew you were deprived ha ha!
A cold church is a step, too far, I must say St Patrick's Cathedral in NY was warm. There is a lot of floor space & not much seating area......I do love a church though & the outside more than makes up.
Sorry I have been missing your posts, but I am finally catching up to your Prague trip, which sounds like our little adventure in NYC in February! Yes, it was freezing cold, and going in and out of buildings while fully bundled up made it difficult to enjoy, but we had a great time anyway! Prague is on my list of places to visit...maybe not in March, now that I see how cold it was!
