Actually it's called Castle Street but everybody calls it Castle Hill because it's such a novelty in flat Cambridge. I've taken this photo umpteen times because it's my dog walking route to town. I went to photograph the anemones on the Backs but didn't quite get what I wanted - I'll try again tomorrow. The church in the distance is St John's College chapel. There is also tiny St Peter's church on the right hand side, the Methodist church on the hill, St Giles' lovely church on the left at the bottom of the hill and the Jewish Chabad just out of shot on the right. On the left behind the pub is castle mound - site of Cambridge's castle and the place Nigel proposed to me. Ariana Franklin's book 'Mistress of the Art of Death' is a very entertaining murder mystery - set in 13th Century Cambridge and this part of town in particular.
Fave Judith...I love your street views of Cambridge! I particularly like the pub sign against the white sky background...it shows up so colourfully! A potted tour of this area in your town......a proposal too! Must be a very nostalgic place for you!
@happypat had to dash home and help our house mates cook our Christmas dinner (before we went home for the hols) but Nigel did run to a mini bottle of champagne to share!
Interesting perspective with St John's chapel dominating the view. I don't often walk down here, it being the 'wrong' side of the city for me. I like the way you've got the Castle sign in focus in the foreground.
Good views of the buildings and a huge amount of chimney pots. Like the view down the hill, good pov of the street. . I spy a bike creeping in to the shot. Like your narrative, always interesting to get some background.
