This was the view out of my kitchen window at breakfast time this morning... She was a very good Mother and had a trouble free delivery and the calf fell to the ground soon after this shot and she turn straight around and started to lick her little one and soon after the calf was up having a feed ... That is the way Farmer George likes it ...
What????? The calf just falls out???? With the mother standing up? Oh, my! And what a photo -- talk about action! The calf is bigger than I would have imagined. Oh, wow . . . . the things you see and learn on 365!
@jyokota Yep really only falls a few inches and the jolt is good to get it breathing ... far easier if Mum can do it standing with no interferance from Farmer G..a friesian calf is approx 35-40 kg at birth ..
@jamibann some do birth sitting down but probably quicker and easier for them to be standing ... just checked my other shots and 20 seconds after this calf was out and on the ground .. I am always in awe seeing nature doing her thing...
Must've been a sprint to get the camera! What an incredible image - all in clear focus and the calf about to make it into the real world! Terrific timing!
Wonderful image and what a great starlet* to greet the day. I've seen a foal born and as you say, within the moments the mother tends her newborn. A great privilege...thank you for sharing this one.
*I'd wanted to type 'star' although Predictive Text didn't. Good decision by PT, starlet seems more appropriate.
Good girl, trouble free birth is what we like. Hope calving is going well. Brian is about half way now butbthecweather isn't helping is it. Lovely photo of new life.
Oh my gosh --- what a sight to see out your window. Amazing. So glad she is a good mother. It seems like a rough way to enter the world - bonk - right on your head!
