Survivor

I stopped at a boat launch site along the Barrington River for today's photo and proceeded to take a number of shots that I'd been considering for some time. There are a number of very scenic options from this site, and I was planning to shoot the White Church from here. As I was leaving, a woman arrived in a pickup truck and started to unload a kayak. Now, the weather wasn't the best today - rather cold (compared to the past two weeks) and windy. As she prepped her kayak I asked if she'd mind a few photos, and we got to talking. It turns out that she's a breast cancer survivor. She had surgery just about a year ago, and as part of her recovery she started kayaking. She's been putting in a 15-mile per day paddle from this spot every day since her surgery! So not only does the photo of her heading down the Barrington River make for an interesting subject, but it also serves as inspiration for anyone else doing battle with this devastating disease. Her's is quite the accomplishment.

I kept the post processing simple, today. A simple pop filter in Topaz Adjust was followed by a bit of sharpening using a high pass filter in soft light blend mode. From there I added a medium blue gradient in soft light blend to enhance the cold feel of the day, and slightly adjusted the levels for contrast.
Inspiring! My mom did not survive, and I have 3 aunts who are survivors. And it is a great photo... the yellow kayak and her jacket certainly are the focal point!

Nice shot and a great story. Sometimes you never get the story behind the photograph. Nice.
