Let There Be Light

The Dynamo House of the former Narragansett Electric Lighting Company is listed on the Providence Preservation Society's "Most Endangered" list of historic properties. This historic fixture along the Providence River was built in 1924, adding capacity and service to the earlier structures that date to 1917. Coal and oil burning facilities were added through the early part of the 20th century, but this facility primarily burned oil to power its massive turbines. This entire complex was completely replaced by a new set of power plants just east of this site in the early 1990s. The Dynamo House was donated to the Rhode Island Heritage Commission for use as a museum in 1999, however construction stalled and the project itself is in doubt. As a result, the building has been exposed to the elements for over a decade.

Post processing started in Redynamix. I wanted to really draw out the depth of detail in the clouds and in the building itself. Once in PSE, I applied a gaussian blur to the water at a 7 pixel radius, just to smooth out the really harsh contrast and lines that were overly distracting. I sharpened the overall image using a duplicate of the Redynamix layer in soft light blend mode with a high pass filter at 4 pixels. Black and White conversion was done with a gradient map in color blend mode. I adjusted the levels slightly and then applied a sepia photo filter as the top layer.
