All That Remains

The concept of a cross-town highway running through Providence and out to the East Bay was proposed in 1945. The project would linger for over a decade, finally gaining new life when President Eisenhower signed the Interstate Highway bill in 1956. Construction of I-95 in Rhode Island started that year, and I-195 - originally named "Relocated Route 6" - was also started at the same time. The Y interchange with I-95 that plagued west-bound rush hour commuters for years wasn't completed until 1964, however. The interchange included an on-ramp less than 1/4 mile from the split which required travelers intent on heading south on I-95 to cross two lanes of traffic in less than 400 yards. This landscape changed in 2007 when the interchange was redesigned and moved about 1/2 mile south of its original location. All that remains of the old on-ramp system are these concrete pilings in the Providence River.

Post-processing started with a brilliant warm filter in Topaz Adjust. I also adjusted the adaptive exposure, contrast, protect highlights, and adaptive saturation sliders. A slight levels adjustment was added in PSE.
