Hope Dam by kannafoot

Hope Dam

I spotted this dam across the Pawtuxet River when I was photographing the Hope Mill yesterday. The Pawtuxet River is the reason the mill was there in the first place, and this dam controlled the flow of water passed the several mills that sat on that location. The Hope Dam now provides access to the upper Pawtuxet River and the area just above the dam is a popular put-in spot for canoes and kayaks. The area below the dam as seen in today's photo is a trout-stocked fishing hole.

Today's photo was taken with a 10-stop neutral density filter, and was shot at 8 seconds, f/16, ISO 200. The color cast of the original was a bit warm, thanks to the ND filter, and that was adjusted back to the proper white balance in the RAW conversion dialog.

Post processing started with a warm tone II filter in Topaz B&W FX. I then adjusted color sensitivity sliders, adaptive exposure, regions, boost black, boost white, and protect highlights. Levels, brightness, and contrast adjustments were also made in PSE.

Here's the high res version in Smugmug: http://kannafoot.smugmug.com/Photo-Challenges/PAD2013/i-r7dW7Lx/0/XL/2013%2004%2004_0007%202%20copy-XL.jpg
