Downcity Boarding by kannafoot

Downcity Boarding

My original plan for today was to visit the Cape Verdean Festival over at India Point Park. Two things changed my mind. First, it felt like 100 degrees out there, and there's no shade at all at India Point. (Photographing in direct bright sunlight is less than rewarding.) Second, there was no parking to be had anyplace near the park. Opting for "Plan B" I swung down South Main Street and parked near the War Memorial planning to do a bit of street photography. These two boarders were near the WWII Memorial and consented to some photos. They'd found a decent spot to board with plenty of shade, and I was able to capture this shot with both in the same frame. The decision to convert to black and white was out of a desire to add a timeless quality to the image as well as eliminate the "postcard" feeling of the color version. There's more motion and there's more of a dynamic to the black and white version.

Post processing started with a classic filter in Topaz B&W FX. I adjusted color sensitivity sliders, adaptive exposure, regions, contrast, boost black, and boost white. A levels adjusted and sepia photo filter were added in PSE. I also applied a 7% midtone dodge to select parts of the image for improved contrast.

Here's the high res version in Smugmug: http://kannafoot.smugmug.com/Photo-Challenges/PAD2013/i-XBTcX4q/0/XL/2013%2007%2007_0023%20copy-XL.jpg
