Ready and Waiting

My original plan today was to visit a section of the Blackstone River Bikeway that I normally don't photography. On the way, though, I spotted these empty freight cars waiting on the heavy rail tracks owned by the Providence and Worcester Railroad. I liked the overall setting, especially with the large smoke stack from a still-active mill looming large in the distance.

Post processing started with a classic filter in Topaz B&W FX. I adjusted color sensitivity sliders, adaptive exposure, regions, contrast, boost black, boost white, and protect highlights. A levels adjustment was added in PSE.

Here's the high res version in Smugmug: http://kannafoot.smugmug.com/Photo-Challenges/PAD2014/i-dMjCp3H/0/XL/2014%2002%2025_0005%20copy-XL.jpg
The lines of the tracks are really cool, and the snow adds an interesting contrast. Nice picture!

@justaspark Thanks, Jule! I've got to find a spot to photograph that old mill in the background (that doesn't involve trespassing LOL) since it's really got a lot of character.

You really should - bet it would look nice :D
(The county of Minden-Lübbecke, where I live, is famous for mills. It's also often called the "Mühlenkreis". I should shoot a few too, but I think I'll wait till spring :) )

@justaspark I browsed Google for some photos from Minden. You live in an absolutely beautiful city! There's so much to photograph there, it's amazing. I think the Cathedral alone could fill a month in the project.

@kannafoot Thank you :D You know, after living *insert my age here* years here, you don't find it interesting anymore, because you don't know it any other way :( I really have to have a look in the Old Town - I have not really shot so much there yet, since I live 10 mins out of the centre. But I do know there are way uglier cities out there :p
A month of the cathedral is actually a nice idea. Maybe I will try when I run out of ideas. :D

@justaspark That's one of the benefits of the 365 project. It forces us to look at the areas we frequent the most through the eyes of a tourist rather than a local. When you think about it, we take most of our photos within 10 minutes of where we live, work, or go to school. It's all we have time for every day! Being able to see our hometowns as if we're seeing them for the first time is the real challenge we get to solve in this project.
