Rally for Resilience
03 May 2014 -- 123/365
Providence, Rhode Island
Knowing the weather would be good today, I checked the events section of the paper to see if there was anything interesting planned. It turns out there was a "Rally for Resilience" planned at the State Capitol in Providence. Knowing any form of protest or march provides interesting photo opportunities, I went downcity for their noon rally. It turns out, the rally was to raise climate change awareness and call for state legislation regarding emissions. The turnout was extremely light - maybe 100 people, mostly college students. The rally started with a half-dozen speakers on the steps of the State House and culminated in a march from the Capitol to Burnside Park in Kennedy Plaza.
Post processing started with a classic filter in Topaz B&W FX. I adjusted color sensitivity sliders, adaptive exposure, regions, and contrast. A levels adjustment was added in PSE.
I really like how where you are standing captures so many faces. Perhaps they feel that soon they will be dispersed for the summer, the weather is good, and so now is the time to get together and do the march. On the other hand, finals are around the corner, so this really is a sacrifice to do this at this time for college students.
@cejaanderson I almost got stampeded! LOL I was zoomed out to 24mm so as to include the State House, and I always forget just how close that will focus. That poor girl directly in front of me was only about 2 feet away when I looked up and realized how close they were. lol As to finals, I'm not sure when Brown University has theirs. (These were mostly Brown students.) I suspect they're coming up in a week or two, though. Several of the girls I spoke to were Geology and Climatology majors, so I'm sure they have a truckload of studying to do.
What a great idea to check the paper for events! Yet another beautiful shot on your behalf Ron and its good to see some people passionate about a cause! :)
